Auditing & Due Diligence
Auditing and due diligence have become an intrinsic part of the resource development industry. Auditing and due diligence consist of a wide range of activities involving multi-disciplinary aspects and requires the use of experienced professionals in the fields of engineering, environmental, legal, financial, and resource evaluation experts. Over the past ten years, this field of work has become progressively more sophisticated and routine to the industry. This has been driven by two influences:
• The globalization of the industry in which companies have entered into countries where norms and regulations have not been established for resource development. The requirements for financing of these projects and the intrinsic liability transferred to multi-lateral financial institutions and commercial banking has resulted in the establishment of internactional policies and guidelines for project development.
• The recognition by resource development companies that development and operation of properties must have a consistent philosophy and approach.
With the consolidation of the industry through mergers and acquisitions, the importance of recognizing and quantifying liability is paramount. Similarly, disclosure requirements placed on publicly traded companies have reinforced the requirement for systematic auditing and due diligence review.
